Today's Quotes - Instant

posted May 7, 2009, 8:09 AM by Banzai Ben
Edwin Herbert Land was born at Bridgeport, Connecticut a century ago today. After his freshman year at Harvard, the chemistry student decamped for New York where he developed filters to polarize light, sneaking into a chem lab at Columbia University late at night to use the equipment. Returning to Harvard, he lost all interest in homework after he solved a problem, he continued to pass only because his instructors got his wife to get the answers from him and turn in his homework. In 1947 he developed the first instant camera, and continued to work on exotic optical problems for the military. When the market turned to digital photography, "Instant" wasn't fast enough and the company Land founded couldn't keep up. In fact, the current owner of the company is in jail: He couldn't wait for normal economic growth and turned to the instant wealth of a Ponzi scheme.
